Three construction methods. Nine wood species. Every surface leaves the workshop pre-finished, profiled, and cut to your exact measurements — ready to drop in.
What Defines Butcher Block
Butcher block refers to a construction method where timber is arranged to form a dense, functional surface typically used in preparation areas.
All materials are selected in line with our TRUE WOOD™ STANDARD, ensuring the surface performs consistently throughout.
All of our surfaces are made to order. Standard dimensions exist as a reference point — most clients end up with something that fits their space precisely rather than something that approximates it.
Structural Detailing
This is resolved during the design phase through our FAILURE-FIRST™ DESIGN APPROACH, particularly in areas where concentrated use is expected.
Finishing
All surfaces are completed under the FULLY CURED™ FACTORY FINISH STANDARD, ensuring consistency before installation.
Installation
No adjustments are made during installation, in line with our No-Site-Work™ Policy.
Installation follows our PREDICTABLE INSTALL™ SYSTEM.
Three construction methods
The construction method determines how the surface performs in use, how it ages, and what it costs. None of the three is universally better — each suits different conditions.
Edge Grain
Most approachableWood strips are arranged side by side and bonded along their narrow edges. The result is a linear grain pattern running the length of the surface. Edge grain construction is dimensionally stable, works well in humid kitchen environments, and can be made to almost any length.
End Grain
A step upThe growth rings face upward in a checkerboard arrangement. End grain is the densest and most durable construction — knife marks close over time rather than deepening, which is why professional kitchens and butchers have used this surface for generations. It also absorbs oils well, which simplifies long-term maintenance.
Face Grain
Most characterfulWide planks are joined edge to edge, exposing the full face of the timber. The grain figures, natural character marks, and the species' distinctive patterns are most visible here. Face grain surfaces have a wide-plank quality that the other constructions don't replicate.
Nine species — each with its own character
Species selection affects appearance, density, stability, and how the surface ages. Most clients arrive with a visual preference; the species page for each timber covers the practical side of the decision.
European White Beech
Tight, consistent grain. One of the most popular.
African Mahogany
Warm reddish-brown. Striking end grain pattern.
American White Ash
Light, open grain. Works well in contemporary kitchens.
White Oak
Dense and durable. Distinctive ray fleck pattern.
Red Oak
Warm pink-brown tones. Pronounced open grain.
Iroko
African hardwood. Stable and rich in colour.
Kiaat
Golden-brown. One of the most requested species.
Rhodesian Teak
Dense, dark, architectural. Exceptional durability.
Pine
Light and characterful. Most approachable price point.
Six things included with every order
Everything is handled in the workshop before the surface leaves. Installation is straightforward because the complexity is resolved beforehand.
Edge profiling
Every exposed edge is profiled in the workshop. Bullnose, eased, chamfer, pencil round, or square — chosen at the time of order, applied before finishing.
Precision cutouts
Sink, hob, tap hole, and drainage cutouts are cut and finished in the workshop. Dimensions taken from your specifications or technical drawings. More on cutouts →
Pre-finished surface
Matt, satin, or gloss applied under controlled workshop conditions. Unvarnished surfaces are supplied sanded to 150 grit, ready for your chosen oil or finish.
Production blueprint
Your sketch or dimensions become a dimensioned production drawing before any material is cut. You confirm the drawing before we begin.
Expert consultation
Species, construction method, thickness, finish — if any of these decisions need working through, that conversation happens before the order is placed, not after.
Care and installation documentation
Maintenance guide, installation instructions, and a measuring guide ship with every order. Lead times and shipping →
Complete the kitchen in the same timber
Matching surfaces from the same species and batch create a unified result that is difficult to achieve any other way. These are the most commonly paired additions.
What most clients ask before ordering
Can I get a butcher block countertop if I'm not in Nelspruit?
Yes. We ship nationwide across South Africa and to neighbouring countries. Every order is wrapped and packaged professionally — larger orders ship in purpose-built crates. Delivery goes directly to your door, whether you're in Cape Town, Johannesburg, Durban, or anywhere in between.
What's the current lead time?
Currently 3 to 4 weeks from confirmed order and deposit. Lead times can vary with order volume and seasonal demand. See current lead times →
Can I get a sample before ordering?
Yes. Samples are available and can be purchased with the exact species, construction, and finish specifications of your intended countertop. Most clients find this resolves the remaining decision quickly.
What finishes are available?
Matt, satin, gloss, and unvarnished (sanded to 150 grit, ready for your own oil or finish). All finishes are applied in the workshop before despatch. See finish options →
Do you make island tops with a waterfall edge?
Yes. Waterfall edge islands are built in the same way as standard countertops — the vertical panel is cut and matched from the same board or batch to continue the grain around the corner. More on waterfall edges →
What's the difference between butcher block and a standard wooden countertop?
In practice, the terms are used interchangeably. Technically, butcher block refers to end grain construction built specifically for food preparation — the kind used by butchers and professional kitchens. We use the term to refer to any of our solid wood countertop constructions.
Do you offer steel reinforcement for longer spans?
Yes. Steel bar reinforcement is available for longer unsupported spans and overhangs. It prevents movement and seasonal warping without adding visible mass to the surface. More on steel reinforcement →
