A floating tread must support its own weight and live loads without visible riser support. Thickness is the primary structural variable — 60mm to 80mm is the standard range for residential floating treads. The fixing method (threaded rod into the wall, steel plate, or stringer-mounted bracket) is determined by the builder or structural engineer and is not part of our scope.
We supply the tread to your specified dimensions with the fixing method clearly noted so the tread is routed, drilled, or prepared for the installation as required.
Species selection
The most suitable species for floating treads are those with high hardness scores: Kiaat, White Oak, Rhodesian Teak, and Iroko. European White Beech is also a reliable choice where a lighter tone is preferred.
Finish for floating treads
Satin varnish is the most commonly specified finish for floating treads — it provides sufficient protection for foot traffic while maintaining a natural appearance. Matt finishes are available but require more frequent maintenance on a heavily trafficked surface. See finish options →
