Face grain is the most commonly chosen construction for desktop surfaces — the wide plank quality suits the horizontal plane of a desk well and the grain character is visible at close working range. Edge grain is chosen where greater thickness is the intention, or where the desk will carry heavy equipment and dimensional stability matters.
Standard desktop thicknesses run from 25mm (face grain) to 44mm (edge grain). Thicker surfaces are available and are sometimes chosen for standing desks where the visible end profile contributes to the design.
Cable management
Grommet holes and cable routing channels can be incorporated during construction. Positions and diameters are confirmed at the time of order and cut in the workshop before finishing.
Species for desktops
All nine species are available for desktop surfaces. Pine is a practical choice for desk surfaces — the load demands are lower than a kitchen countertop and the warm, characterful grain suits a home workspace well. For clients matching to existing furniture, Beech, Oak, or Ash may be the correct choice. Kiaat and Mahogany for warmer, richer desks.
