The nosing — the front edge of the tread that projects beyond the riser — is profiled in the workshop. Standard profiles include bullnose, pencil round, and eased. The nosing is typically 20mm to 25mm and profiles to a smooth, consistent radius that is comfortable underfoot and meets standard building code requirements in most jurisdictions.
Thickness for traditional treads
Traditional treads sit on a riser rather than cantilevering, which means structural depth is less critical than for floating treads. Standard thickness is 32mm to 44mm. Thicker treads (60mm) are available where the visual depth at the front of the tread is part of the design intention.
Species and hardness
The same hardness guidance applies to traditional treads as to floating: Pine is not suitable. Kiaat, White Oak, Beech, Iroko, and Rhodesian Teak are the correct choices. See all species →
