Island countertops are exposed on three or four sides. The end profile is visible and becomes part of the design — which makes thickness a more significant decision than on a wall-mounted run. Edge grain and end grain construction allow for greater depth (60mm to 100mm is common for island tops) and produce a more considered edge profile.
Face grain island tops are typically limited to 44mm — which can read as thin on a large island. If thickness is part of the visual intention, edge grain is the more straightforward route.
Overhangs and seating
Islands with breakfast bar seating typically require an overhang of 300mm to 400mm. Any overhang over 200mm benefits from steel reinforcement bars installed during construction — these prevent the overhang from moving or flexing under load without adding visible mass to the surface.
Hob and sink cutouts
Island tops with integrated hobs or sinks are built with the cutouts completed in the workshop. This is not site work — the precision required to cut cleanly through a thick, finished surface is only reliably achieved under workshop conditions. See cutout options →
Waterfall edge islands
For islands where the countertop material continues vertically down one or both ends to the floor, we build the vertical panels from the same batch as the top — matching grain and colour as closely as the timber allows. More on waterfall edges →
